YOUR IDENTITY

Judges 6:6-12, 1 Pet 2:9

Our identity in Christ Jesus matters a lot because it gives us the assurance and boldness of who we are in Christ and what we represent. Through the death of Christ and the new covenant, we were bought with the precious Blood of the Lamb, redeemed and adopted as children of God, and have been translated into His marvelous light. In spite of our background and family history, God is more than able to rewrite our destinies and histories so long as we acknowledge and recognize that we are His.

In Judges 6:12, Gideon was told of the presence of the Lord being with him as he was about to encounter the worshippers of Baal. The Bible did not record any history of Gideon’s prowess or a display of his might; yet, he was regarded as ‘a mighty man of valour‘. Interestingly, Gideon was given a rank that outweighed his weaknesses or past as God discarded his history and gave him a new identity not as a weakling, but as a mighty one.

As new creation believers, knowing our individualities as chosen generations, royal priesthoods, holy nations and co-heirs with Jesus (Rom 8:16-17), will help in reframing our minds; and cause us to maintain a posture of sanctity in our environments. Believe what God has called you to be, bearing in mind that faithful is He who has called, who will also do it. Your identity in Christ is important, do not compromise it in any way.

To maintain our identity in Christ, do not be conformed to this world, Romans 12:2. That means that our thoughts, actions, words and behaviour should align with that of Jesus. This entails being Christ like. You must learn to flee evil lusts, desires and every appearance of evil, 2 Timothy 2:22. 1 Corinthians 10:13 provides an assurance that, when you are tempted, God will also provide a way out. Guide your thoughts with the word of God. “For the word is quick and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of thought and intent of heart” Hebrew 4:12. Finally, look unto Jesus. We should make Jesus our grand example and model. We should lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith…Hebrew12:l-2.

PRAYER: LORD, help me maintain my identity in Christ.
