OBEDIENCE AS A VIRTUE
I Pet. 1:2 ; Philemon 1: 21
One of the attributes that distinguish a child in whom the parents are well pleased is the virtue or quality of being obedient to instructions. No parent or person in authority over one’s life will be pleased with a child or subordinate who is always disobedient to instructions or orders given to them.
The Scriptures says in Rom. 6:16 :
“ know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey, whether of sin unto death , or of obedience to righteousness”.
This portion of the Bible tells us clearly that there are two sides of the divide: it’s either one is walking in obedience or disobedience. What determines whose child or servant you are, is the one to whom you are obedient.
Apostle Peter in Acts 5:29, tells us that “we ought to obey God rather than men” which simply means that when the instruction of man contradicts what the word of God says, the option for a child of God is to obey what the word of God says as we see demonstrated by the three Hebrew young men in Daniel 3: 1-18.
Our obedience to God’s word must be total as there is no half-obedience. When God gives us an instruction, as a true child of God, we must ensure that we obey such instructions to the fullest and not act like what king Saul did when he was instructed to go and destroy the Amalekites and all that they had but spared their king and some choice things claiming that he wanted them as sacrifices unto God. This displeased the Lord, and as a result of this act of disobedience, the kingdom was taken away from him(Saul).
Let us learn to walk in obedience to God’s instruction always.
