Psalm 90: 1-12

So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our

                        Hearts unto wisdom”

It is a given that you know this verse off-hand and have recited it over and over especially when you organize or attend birthday events.  But do we really comprehend the phrase “number our days”?  Numbering is more difficult than counting.  When you count days, it is about “how many”.  When you number, it is about “how far”.  Numbering your days, implies assigning tasks, purposes and assessing purposes and outcomes.

For a proper understanding, let us explore the implications of the key verse 12.  For us, it speaks of the fleeting nature of life and the importance of living. In a way, it is about honouring God and fulfiling man.    It is a call to live each day with intention and purpose realizing that each day is a precious, part of our life.  As the days go, so is our life.  If the days are empty, so is life also empty!  David lived 70 years. Today, 3000 years after, we are still counting the things in his numbered days.

You must know that life is a story.  The author is God.  We spend life as a “tale that is told”.  Hence, we must live each day in accordance with God’s instruction and directive.  Our purpose must align with his purpose.  With limited time, we should seek to live lives that have lasting impact and leave legacy of faith and love.  Every moment of our day is a gift, and we should use it wisely.  Don’t waste time on things that don’t matter, but rather invest your time in what is eternal.  Always be reminded that God is eternal and His love and grace will continue beyond earthly lifespan.

In numbering your days this year, please put the following into practice.

  • Live each day with intention. Make the most of the time you have.  Time is slippery.  It is the tasks accomplished in it that matter.
  • Seek to know God’s plan.  Ask for wisdom and direction for each day and follow it.
  • Focus on what matters.  Prioritize your time and resources on what is most important.
  • Live with a sense of urgency.   Don’t put off things that matter to a later day.  Do it now.  Act with faith and courage.
  • Leave a legacy of faith.  Live your year in a way that would inspire others (and even you) and leave a positive impact on the world.
