STOP POVERTY IN YOUR LIFE III

Deuteronomy 8:18

As we continue in our study of how to overcome poverty today, we will examine the purpose of wealth. In our text, the Bible says: ‘but thou shalt remember the Lord thy God for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth that he may establish his covenant which he swore unto thy fathers as it is this day’. The question therefore is what is the purpose of wealth? According to this scripture God gives us power to get wealth that he may establish his covenant which he has promised to our fathers and to the body of Christ.

Recognizing that wealth is not given unto us to consume on ourselves, but given unto us for a purpose is one of the things that set a child of God up for prosperity. Once we recognize that whatever comes to us is not really for us but we are a channel to fulfilling what God has in mind to do on the face of earth and for humanity, then we are set to receive what God has in mind. For example, every pipe that conducts water to a location always receives water flowing through it but the moment the pipe is blocked and is not delivering water to any location, the water stops flowing. In the same way our lives are designed by God to be a channel of His blessings. When we recognize the purpose for which his wealth is meant, then the more we are able to receive his wealth.

The second point to note in line with this is to commit ourselves to fulfilling the purpose for which God’s wealth is being released to us. We can see a clear example of this situation in the experience of the widow of Zarephath who God sent to feed his servant in the time of famine. This account is recorded in the book of 1 Kings 17:9-16. In this passage, from verse 11 says ‘as she was going to fetch it, he called her and said bring me I pray thee a morsel of bread in thy hand and she said as the Lord thy God liveth I have not a cake but a handful of meal in a barrel and a little oil in a cruse and behold I am going gathering two sticks that I may go in and dress it for me and my sons that we may eat it and die. And Elijah said unto her fear not go and do as thou has said but make me thereof a little cake first and bring it unto me and after make for thee and for thy son for thus saith the Lord God of Israel the barrel of meal shall not waste neither shall the cruse of oil fail until the day that the Lord sendeth rain upon the earth and she went and did according to the saying of Elijah and she and he and her house did eat many days and the barrel of meal wasted not neither did the cruse of oil fail according to the word of the Lord which he spake by Elijah’

Praise the LORD! This is how sons and daughters of God enter into abundance by committing themselves to fulfilling the purpose for which God sent resources their way. See how God showed her a greater purpose for that flour that was going to finish and God because she obeyed the voice of God, her so-called diminishing reserve never finished until there was abundance again in the land. What is that in your hand? Please recognize that it was given to you for a purpose. The more you use it for that purpose, the more it flows to you and you will never run dry.

MEDITATION: My riches are for a purpose.
