THE TONGUE

James 3:1-10

The tongue is one of the smallest parts of the body, yet it determines the destiny of the person as well as the destiny of many people around him. The tongue largely determines the good or the bad that befalls a man. The tongue determines how happy we are in life; how useful to the Lord; how healthy we are in ourselves and how spiritual. It is the tongue that determines how friendly we are in society; successful, profitable, good and how well-remembered our lives will be after we are gone.

It is the tongue on the other hand that determines our sadness, rejection, defeat, loss, failure, suffering in life, unanswered prayers and self-destruction. 1peter 3:10 says “For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile”.  Therefore, the way you use your tongue will ultimately determine your destiny.

The tongue is compared to a bit put in the mouth of a horse which makes the rider to control it. In the same way, if a man can bridle his tongue, he will be able to control his course in life. In 2kings 2:23-42, we read the story of some youths that misused their tongue by mocking Elijah, the prophet. Their destiny was cut short because of the reaction of the prophet. As believers, learn to use your tongue well so that good things will continue to happen to you in life.
