REPUTATION MATTERS

Proverbs 22:1-8

God wants us to value what we are far above what we have. Verse 1 says a good name is better than riches. A name represents who a person is. It says a lot about the person’s character and reputation. Reputation is fragile. It takes effort and time to build but it can be destroyed in a twinkle of an eye. By one moment of indiscretion, it can be lost forever.

More importantly, as followers of Jesus Christ who bear His name, we ought to walk worthy of Him, reflecting his image and likeness in our day to day transactions. We are called to a life of integrity, uprightness and honesty, choosing a good name rather than worldly possessions.

A good name is synonymous with good character, good conduct and integrity. It is not strange to be bombarded by unrighteous ways that seem right because they have become acceptable to the society. Its acceptability and permissiveness does not in any way make what is wrong right. God desires that his children stand out and uphold righteousness. We have taken His name that is why we are called Christians. This is why we should be careful how we live our lives. We are His ambassadors. We represent Him.

Our lives should exemplify our source: “I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing” (John15:5).  The fruit we bear should bring honour and glory to His name. Value your reputation.

Memory Verse: “A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one’s birth” (Ecclesiastes 7:1).

MEDITATION: Ponder on the Memory Verse.
