THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD

Mathew 5:14-16

Another metaphor used by Jesus to describe his disciples is the “light of the world”. Mathew 5:14. This is a phrase he used to describe himself in John 8:12 saying “I am the light of the world.  Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life”.  By using the same phrase to describe himself and disciples, Jesus emphasizes the fact of oneness and sameness between him and his followers.

Light is defined as the natural agent that stimulates sight and makes things visible.  The absence of light makes darkness to be prevalent.  But when light appears, darkness disappears.  There is no two ways to it; light is the anti-dote to darkness.  You do not pray for darkness to go; just introduce light and darkness will recede automatically. “The light shineth in the darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not” John 1:5.  This simply means that the Christian is an indestructible force. No darkness, however thick can resist or overcome a tiny ray of light.  As the light of the world, you must not allow environmental or societal influence to affect the intensity of your light.

Light shines. The darkness around is even a catalyst for the brightness of the shining.  In the same vein, the Christian must shine forth as light whenever he finds himself.  Your virtues, principles and character must be exemplary.  Even in your career and/or academics and profession or trade, you must excel- shining forth as light.

Light provides illumination.  You are the solution in your neighbourhood.  Where there is light, nobody stumbles or misses the way.  The fact that you are there should bring succor to your environment.  Things must work because you are there.  Help someone.  A simple act of kindness will lighten up a person’s life.  You don’t know what that smile of yours can accomplish.  Just give it.  It can brighten up someone’s day. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on candle stick and it giveth light unto all that are in the house, Mathew 5:15

You cannot hide light, so also should a Christian not be in obscurity.  No.  You are meant to showcase the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.  Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven.  Matt. 5: 1-6

Dearly beloved, you are the light of the world.  Be the light. Shine!  Show the light.  Provide illumination.  Do good works.   Be an example of believers, you cannot be overcome.

MEDITATION:  Let your light so shine before men.

PRAYER: My light shall shine continually, I shall not be extinguished.
