THE LAW OF FOCUS
Matthew 6: 19-24
Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee – Proverbs 4: 25
In life, distractions abound. There are many shinning things; things that will always love to take your attention. Once you’ve been able to identify a clear vision, every energy should be channelled towards actualizing the vision. Your talent, resources, relationship and time are all ingredients towards achieving your vision. As such if it’s not part of your vision or related to it, you must do everything to starve it of your energy, you cannot afford to invest any resources into any ventures that won’t actualize your vision.
Apostle Paul said: “Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:12-14). This presents to us a man who is committed to a task. To focus is to concentrate your attention on something or someone, channelling your energy in one direction to achieve a specific goal. It can be described as strength put in the right direction. Where your attention is, is where your energy will be. If your life lacks focus, distraction is inevitable. Distraction is avoidable with focus. The place of focus in life cannot be overestimated. Once the matter of vision is sorted, the next vital thing is focus.
To bring your vision to reality, you must stay focused. In Matthew 14, at the beckoning of Jesus, Peter dared to walk where only Jesus walked, on water! He started off looking on to Jesus, who made him realize it was doable. But the moment he took his eyes off the target, he lost focus, he began to sink. This is what happens when we give in to distraction, we lose sight of the target and lose focus. We can never accomplish any task without focus. Without focus, as happened to Peter, distractions can drown the visioner.
One thing about staying focussed is that no one can make it happen for you. You have to do it yourself and be intentional about it. Many abandon their goals along the way because of lack of focus. You must be cautious, anything can make you lose focus, even the seemingly good things. You must endeavour to put your energy in the right direction. Don’t lose sight of your goal. When you are focussed, you do not only accomplish your set task quickly, you will also go far. Focus brings resilience.
You have to develop a singleness of purpose so strong that it has the ability to block out every noise of the market place. With it, there is no amount of discouragement that will make you give up on your dreams. Focus also brings commitment and dedication. Prioritize what matters in your life, focus on it and give it your best shot. “Therefore, so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air” (1 Corinthians 9:26).
REFLECTION—Life is not for window shopping but focusing on your focus.
