THE RAGING FIRE IN A MISUSED TONGUE.
James 3:6, Prov 26:20-22.
A misused tongue is a devouring fire: it is not under control but flippant and frivolous; always nagging, talking without thinking or considering the consequence of what it says. Its fire can burn down a whole family, church, tribe, profession and the nation. A little fire of argument in the family, disagreement with your boss in the office, dispute in the bus, debate can bring a whole life down. Believers must therefore be careful of their words so that that they do not set fire on the situation. Proverbs 13:3 says “He who keeps his mouth keeps his life, but he who opens his mouth wide shall have destruction”.
It is good to know some examples of the misuse of the tongue.
Lying. This is deliberate falsehood to cover up a sin or to hurt others. Prov 12:22.
Gossiping-Talking negative things about people while they are not there.
Slander: Speaking falsely about or against somebody else
Others: Putting others down, talking too much, whispering and tale bearing, angry words, boasting, bragging, false teaching, exaggerating, complaining, flattering, backbiting.
In order to avoid the wrong use of the tongue, before you speak, always ask yourself: Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary?
PRAYER: Help me o Lord, that I may no longer misuse my tongue.
