THE TONGUE: A REFLECTION OF YOUR HEART.

Mathew 12: 33-37

In our previous study, we learnt that the tongue determines most of the things that happen to anyone. God will always perform what we speak with our mouth. We must know, however, that what we say is a reflection of our thoughts. The problem is not at the doorstep of the tongue but the heart. If the heart is happy then the tongue will speak happy words, if the heart is depraved and dirty, then the tongue will utter words that are dirty, defiled and depraved. If the heart is cleansed and holy, the tongue will speak clean and righteous words, but if the heart is devilish, the tongue will speak devilish and evil words. Idle words can only come from an idle, vacant and worthless heart; the heart that has not experienced the touch and salvation of the Lord.

We shall give account of every idle word that we speak. “For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned” (Matthew 12:37). It is the tongue that prays, confesses, and shows confidence in Christ. It is by the same tongue we can come to ask the Lord for salvation. And then the fire of the Lord touches, purges and transforms that tongue, and this will lead to life and justification. But the tongue that is self-righteous, proud, and says there is no need of the Lord’s salvation would miss conversion, and ultimately end in condemnation. Here on earth, it is our tongues that determine how good our family will be, how prosperous the salesman will be, how good a teacher is, how good anyone in any field or profession is and what we get out of life.

Believers must therefore take care of their heart so that good things that can edify will always come out of their mouth. Prov 4: 23 says you must “guard your heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life”. You must dwell more on the things that are right so that your tongue will always utter words that are edifying.

PRAYERS: Lord, set a guard over my mouth. Cleanse my lips and fill my heart with Your truth. Let my words reflect Your love and power in Jesus name.
