THE REALITY OF SPIRITUAL WAR

Ephesians 6:10-14

In Africa, especially, spirituality is not an abstract concept. It is a lived reality. Long before the arrival of Christianity, our fathers understood that life operates in two dimensions: the visible and the invisible. The physical world was seen as intertwined with the spiritual, and what happens in one realm often affects the other. This worldview makes the idea of spiritual warfare not only relatable but also undeniable.

Traditionally, it is believed that human life is influenced by unseen forces, both benevolent and malevolent. Ancestors, spirits, deities, and even curses or blessings are perceived as agents capable of shaping destiny. This aligns closely with Ephesians 6:12 that “we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers”.

It is therefore important that we come to terms with the fact that life’s battles are more than physical or emotional; they are spiritual. When things go wrong, illness, misfortune, or conflict, it is instinctive to seek not just a physical cause but a spiritual explanation. Whatever happens in the physical must have first been established in the spiritual.

But as Christians, we need not live in fear of losing the battles of life, as our God has never lost a battle. It is, however, expedient that we know what it takes to be winners with Christ. The next few days will be devoted to discussing the battles of life from the perspective of God. Be assured, God is on your side. No matter the battles you are facing, you are more than a conqueror.

PRAYER: Lord, I declare that in you I am more than a conqueror.
